Will be assessed using a rubric which takes into account, the student posters, oral presentations and also student group work.
The presentation and poster focus on the student's understanding of the different marine ecosystems discussed.
Plankton lab
Will be assessed through the lab sheets students turn in at the end of the class period.
The Design your own plankton will also be assessed. Students will have to apply their knowledge of plankton characteristics to develop their own species, and explain the adaptations.
Classification Activity and Lab
Will assess students through their animal classification sheets, as well as lab worksheets. Students will also participate in a class discussion after the classification lab where they will be asked to defend their reasoning of the phyla they chose to place the specimens in.
Student Developed Anatomy Lessons
Will be assessed via the removal and labeling of organs by students after dissection. The lesson itself will also be assessed using a rubric which takes into account, the materials produced by the group of students, oral presentation and group work.
This activity will really test students on the completeness of the knowledge about the organisms they dissected. It will allow the students to see the organs, and learn the functions through several different methods, visually, kinesthetically (dissection and diagrams), as well as verbally through the presentations.
Incredible Invertebrate Website Project and Presentation (Summative Assessment)
The II website project and presentation will act as a summative assessment for the Marine Biology Unit, pulling together all of the different concepts students have learned on Days 1-6, and asking students to apply their knowledge to a specific specie of invertebrate.
Students will be assessed using a rubric which will take into account the website design and completeness, oral presentation, and group work.
Major unit assessments include:
